Jim Hopper, Ph.D.

Welcome to my website.

I have several pages about child abuse – how prevalent it is, its potential effects, where to learn more and, if you're looking, how to find help for yourself or someone you care about.

My goal is to provide scholarly knowledge and resources, in language and formats accessible to any interested and motivated person – young or old, highly educated or not.

I am a researcher and therapist with a doctorate (Ph.D.) in clinical psychology. I have studied the lasting effects of child abuse and have expertise in several related areas. These include issues unique to men, the brain bases of emotion regulation problems, and how mindfulness and meditation can benefit both therapists and their clients.

I am an Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School, and an independent consultant in several areas (e.g., forensic, see Professional Services).

The main pages on my site:

Child Abuse: Statistics, Research, and Resources
This popular page (over 500,000 visitors a year) has information on child abuse statistic in the United States and other English-speaking countries, and provides tools for thinking critically about such statistics and the potential effects of child abuse. Other major topics covered include stages of healing and treatment; how to find help; and how to be helpful to a spouse, partner or friend who is struggling with the effects of child abuse.

Mindfulness: An Inner Resource for Healing from Child Abuse
Explains what mindfulness is, how it can help people struggling with the effects of child abuse in their daily lives and relationships, and how one goes about cultivating greater mindfulness. It provides exercises, reading suggestions, and pointers to a variety of other resources.

Sexual Abuse of Males: Prevalence, Lasting Effects, and Resources
Information and resources on an issue largely ignored in cultures around the world: the sexual abuse of boys and its potential lasting effects in the lives of men.

Recovered Memories of Sexual Abuse: Scientific Research & Scholarly Resources
Addresses the controversial issue of forgetting and remembering experiences of child abuse, which has been terribly misrepresented by most journalists and popular media.

Professional Services
Information on my workshops, talks, forensic services, psychotherapy and clinical consultations.

Peer-Reviewed Publications
This page has most of my publications in scholary journals, which primarily address the biology of emotion regulation problems in PTSD and the nature of traumatic memories.

I don't have much "personal" content on my site, but here are images that I like...
